歯をみがくという日常的な動作によって，てんかんの発作が起こることがあるという。神経学の専門家が，歯みがき中に発作を起こしたことのある患者をビデオで観察したところ，顔に引きつりや痙攣が起こったり，唾液の分泌が激しくなったりする兆候が見られた。患者によっては，歯の特定の部分をみがくことで発作が起こることも分かった。MRIで詳しく調べると，脳の中でも，体の表面や深部の感覚を司る部分に病変がみつかったという。歯みがきのリズミカルな動きでこの部分が刺激されて発作が起こると考えられている。（吉田素子）
Tooth-brushing(1) may trigger(2) seizures(3) in certain people with epilepsy(4), and researchers say lesions(5) in a specific part of the brain may be a cause in some people, according to(6) an article published in the March 6, 2007, issue of Neurology® the scientific journal of the American Academy of Neurology(7).
The article reviewed the cases of three adults with epilepsy who experienced seizures while brushing their teeth. Two of the adults reported some of their seizures occurred when they brushed certain areas of their mouth. The seizures varied from(8) jerking(9) and twitching(10) of the face to(8) salivating vigorously(11). One patient was unable to let go of(12) the toothbrush during the seizure.
The seizures were confirmed by video monitoring(13).
Using an MRI(14), researchers found all three patients had lesions in the somatosensory area(15) of the brain, which is close to the hand and speech motor areas(16).
"The rhythmic(17) act of brushing teeth may excite an already overly excitable(18) area of the brain," said study author Wendyl D'Souza, MBChB, MPH, with the Department of Neurology and Neurological Research at St. Vincent's Hospital, the University of Melbourne in Melbourne, Australia, and a member of the American Academy of Neurology. "This is similar to photosensitive epilepsy(19), which involves(20) seizures triggered by flashing lights(21) and moving patterns(22)."
