「Education Sessions：消化器癌における最新の肝臓標的治療―手術療法や肝動注療法の先にあるものは？」の座長 Steven A. Curley氏に聞く
癌細胞に高い親和性があり，体外からラジオ波を当てると発熱する性質のあるナノ粒子を用いて，癌細胞だけを死滅させようという新たな治療法の研究が進んでいる。本セッションの座長で，その研究を主導しているSteven A. Curley氏（M. D. アンダーソン癌センター）によれば，本法は肝臓だけでなく，肺や前立腺，腎臓，甲状腺など，さまざまな癌に有効な可能性があるという。まだ実験段階ではあるが，将来，癌の夢の治療法になるかもしれないと，その抱負を語ってくれた。（越山みどり）

nano-particle：ナノ粒子
radio frequency：ラジオ波
tumor：腫瘍
Well, we found that certain types of nano-particles release heat when exposed to radio frequency fields. And the result is that we could potentially kill cancers. The beauty of the system is that radio waves in and of themselves do not cause damage to humans or other biologic systems, but if you've got nano-particles in the tumors we could potentially heat and kill the tumors.

non-toxic：毒性のない
It is a potential to be a new type of therapy. We still have a lot of testing to do and we're still several years away from clinical trials. But we believe that it could be a reasonably inexpensive, non-toxic treatment if our work continues to go well.

I think we're probably, as I said, two to three years away from clinical trials, and then, of course, we're going to have to do a lot more study in clinical systems. I don't think it'll be generally available for another five or six years. But we hope to be in human trials within two or three.

Oh, this has been a very good ASCO session. A lot of good inter-action, a lot of focus on inter-disciplinary and multi-disciplinary care, which, I think, is the state of modern treatment of the cancer patient.
