ASCOには，前日発表された膨大な演題のなかから，特に重要な演題についてレビューを行う「Highlights of the Day」という人気のセッションがある。このセッションは朝7時半という早朝からの開催にも関わらず，例年同様，多くの聴講者が会場に詰めかけた。今回編集部では，その3日目の座長を務めた米国スタンフォード大学医学部・Branimir I. Sikic氏にセッション終了後インタビューし，特に印象に残ったテーマについて話を聞いた。

myeloma：骨髄腫 hepatocellular carcinoma：肝細胞癌 targeted drug：分子標的薬
I think that this session, and some of... many of the other presentations we’ve heard at this meeting have shown that we continue to make progress in the treatment of cancer and in introducing new drugs and showing that they have benefit to patients. Even some of the old drugs, or older drugs, are showing benefit in other diseases, such as the use of liposomal doxorubicin or DOXIL in myeloma. There was a very interesting presentation showing that drug was active in that important disease. Yesterday, we heard about sorafenib, for example, in hepatocellular carcinoma, so we have a new targeted drug and for the first time we’re showing some increase in the survival of patients with liver cancer.

Well, I think that the state of Japanese oncology in terms of the quality of care is very high. There are many Japanese oncologists that come to the ASCO meeting and I have come to Japan on several occasions, and my impression is that the practicing oncology and hematology community in Japan is very knowledgeable, very aware of all the progress that has been made and is doing a great job with their patients.
